Global Megacities and Floods: Urban Expansion Patterns

Climate change is increasing the intensity and frequency of precipitation resulting in extreme hydrological events such as flooding. Global megacities situated in proximity to water bodies and floodplains seem to experience recurring devastating floods. Remote sensing and GIS could also provide an understanding of the influence urban expansion patterns have on increased flood exposure.

Example of urban expansion patterns for Guangzhou, China.
